Switchblade question

  • Quote

Postby Mike030979 »

Hey people. OK, so we're all into switchblade knives on here. Or at least most of us are. I was wondering something. Why is it we go onto a knife auction site or whatever, almost all switchblades we see never have a flat grind (standard) blade anymore?? All I ever see is bayonet blades, kris blades, and dagger blades. Now just for the record, and this is just my personal opinion and personal taste; I don't really like bayonet blades or any of the others. I think the flat grind or even swedge blades look a lot better. But all I ever see is bayonet blade, bayonet blade, bayonet blade. Why is that? I'm not trying to say they're bad knives or to discourage anyone here. But it seems that switchblades with standard blades are scarce and extremely hard to find. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks a bunch.

I also prefer the standard blade, or a swedge type blade, but I think we are in the minority, Mike. Seems like most of the collectors in the states prefer the others and is probably why less are available here. In Europe it seems just the opposite.

Hmm...OK. Yeah, the reason I prefer the standard or swedge over the others is that I find the standard blade to be just more attractive.

I prefer a dagger blade over any other. The standard to me is the least appealing. Just a matter of preference.

And the standard blade is also a better blade to sharpen incase you feel the need to use it to cut something.

If you look at a makers site like http://www.skm.to/home.html you can see that the standard blade is an option in just about every size, usually even a couple bucks cheaper than the bayo, dagger, kriss.

Are you looking for a certain knife in particular?

I think the bayonet blade is "Classic." When I hear "Italian stiletto," that's the first thing that comes to mind. One glimpse atta bayonet blade and you know instinctively it's for one thing and one thing only - STABBING! Adds to the 'forbidden' aspect and mystique of the Italian stiletto...

Onna other hand your flat grind, standard, plain blade, etc. are about as boring and non-threatening as your basic boyscout knife or your grandpa's Uncle Henry whittler...

Just my ownself mos' humble (and totally worthless) opinion...

Well I guess I might be part of the minority then, because my favorite grind by far is the flat grind with swedge. That's a big part of the reason I like 60's swingers and transitionals so much. Like Mike, I've often wondered why there haven't been more of them being produced recently. Seems like it's getting harder to find flat grind on modern stilettos, be them from Italy or elsewhere. I can understand the mentality of the bayo grind being the classic from the picklocks in the fifties, but I still much prefer a flat grind or flat grind w/ swedge.

The bayonet blade is the "classic" but I like all the blade grinds on the Italian stilettos.
I have often thought about getting a couple standard grinds and have one of the manglers put a "swedge" grind on them.
Sometimes I feel I am the only one that likes the kriss style.Love to get a 13" with brass bolsters and light horn.
I fell in love with the dagger when I first saw it,especially on the 5mm Cat stamps and the AGA Batwing like the one Free has. Wow that thing is just nasty Switchblade question - TalkBlade.Info Knife Forums (13)

Again everyone has their personal faves but as long as you agree with me we are just fine Switchblade question - TalkBlade.Info Knife Forums (14)

The bayonet blade is indeed the classic because it was the style on the 1950s knives and gives the knives an "assault knife" appearance, and perhaps the flat-grind blades came along as an attempt to "sporterize" these evil and subversive knives. Switchblade question - TalkBlade.Info Knife Forums (16)
I did not hear the term "bayonet" blade until sometime in the mid-90s. I had always thought of it as a half-dagger blade. It obviously got its nickname because the blade is similar to the blades on GI bayonets that were first designed in late World War II for the M1 Carbine. That blade design was later used on M1 Garand, M14 and M16 bayonets. I found the term "bayonet blade" to describe a switchblade odd because I am certain the Italian knife makers did not copy a bayonet design when they created this blade style. I'm not being critical of the term (like I am with the term "transitional) because it does describe the blade type well.

This thread inspired me to start the poll. It got me curious about people's taste in blade grinds. I guess there'll be a lot of people without a favorite. Too bad you can't vote for more than one.

I too wish more flat grinds were available but I also remember the 80s when bayonet blades were non existent, except on vintage knives, and unfortunately, I did not own any vintage Italians stilettos then. I do wish they would make more eight-inch knives with flat grind blades. I carried one of those off and on for several years in the eighties-early 90s before I sold it and it was a good EDC knife. Now, not only is that blade style harder to find, that size is not as common either.

Like I mentioned a couple posts up, I think they do produce quite a few flat grind knives still, but they go to the Euro market. Maybe if dealers here realize that there is a market here they will purchase/import more.

Yep, I'm with Brendan on this one. Much like your batwing swinguards that you have, one in particular that you own is the black batwing with swedge blade. It's got more of a "lethal" look to the knife other than the ones with the bayonet on them. Having it look more lethal makes it more attractive in my opinion!
