Training, new equipment address sheriff’s body camera problems exposed after deputy shot 2 teens: A fatal shooting of two unarmed teens in a stolen car by an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputy in September made public problems with handling of dashboard and body-worn cameras.The shooting wasn’t captured on the equipment because the deputy failed to activate either camera. Also, the department didn’t set up equipment to turn on cameras automatically. Five months later, the sheriff’s office has updated its body camera policy, activated technology so the cameras will turn on automatically more often, and retrained all road patrol deputies on the new expectations and technologies.

The top-earning Onondaga County employees, ranked: A total of eight Onondaga County workers made over $200,000 in 2023, including three who made that much solely because of overtime pay. A total of 294 people earned more than $100,000 working for the county in 2023, including 154 from the sheriff’s office. 36 families cheated out of bail money, DA says. Woman, son arrested: Thirty-six people have put up money or property for bail bonds to stay out of jail in Onondaga County only to find out the bonds were fraudulent. Now, some of those people are being ordered back to jail and they or their families appear to be out the tens of thousands of dollars they put up for the bonds. A mother and son have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
Syracuse named among best places to live in Northeast: If you’re looking for a new place to live on the East Coast, Upstate New York is calling. Five communities in the Empire State — including Syracuse — have been named among the 25 best places to live in the Northeast by the website Livability.

Benny Williams dismissed from Syracuse basketball team: Syracuse junior basketball player Benny Williams — a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 18 games this season — has been dismissed from the team. Williams’ dismissal was announced in a post on the SU basketball program’s Instagram account.
