How to dye glamour and items in FFXIV (2024)

When it comes to Final Fantasy XIV, there is a very important aspect that bonds people throughout the game – glamour. It’s the true endgame.

Although not everybody has the same taste in fashion, most players seem dedicated to customizing character looks, designing outfits, and specifying color schemes. For newcomers, let’s look at that last one: how to dye your FFXIV outfits — which should also be handy for other items, like housing.

Unlocking the Dye ability

Very early into your FFXIV adventures, you’ll unlock the ability to Dye items. Just reach Level 15, and then it’s off to Western Thanalan for the quest.

Color Your World – Unlock Dye

  • Teleport to Vesper Bay in Western Thanalan
  • Head to Vesper Bay and locate Swyrgeim (X12.6 Y14.3)
  • Accept her quest, “Color Your World”
  • Upon completion, she gives you Dye and the ability to use it

Not all items are created dyeable

Sometimes, when you’re scrolling through the seemingly endless choices on the Marketboard or browsing through the online store, it’s hard to tell if something is dyeable or not. Most things are, but a few things aren’t.

In the screenshot above, there’s an easy way to tell which glam is dyeable. The Rainbow Justaucorps and the High House Justaucorps are two items that are more or less identical except for one thing – the Rainbow Justaucorps cannot be dyed.

When you hover over an item, check the small preview image that comes up. If there is a small circle in the top right corner, the item is dyeable. This circle is visible within your inventory, too.

When looking for something fancy on the FFXIV Online Store, hovering over the name of an item will bring up a pop-up window. You can find information here about whether an item is dyeable.

Where to find Dye

To begin with, you’re going to need some dyes. There are multiple ways to get them, from gathering the pigment yourself and crafting your own dyes, to purchasing them on the Marketboard or FFXIV Online Store.

Crafting your own

Pigments are found throughout Eorzea, and using your Disciple of the Land classes, you can gather to create your own, though not all colors are craftable.

To find out which pigment you need, open your crafting menu and move to the Level-based Recipes tab. Select “Other” and the window will display all craftable Dyes. To figure out where a pigment can be gathered from, right click on the pigment and select “Search for Item by Gathering Method”.

Purchasing Dyes

Various vendors throughout the game sell dyes. One good place to start is the Dyemongers in the following locations:

  • Unsynrael – Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (X6.0 Y12.3)
  • Nanabe – Steps of Thal in Ul’dah (X14.2 Y11.0)
  • Alaric – Old Gridania (X14.3 Y8.8)
  • Frine – The Pillars in Foundation (X6.0 Y9.9)
  • Tokohana – Kugane (X12.9 Y12.2)

The most popular and easiest method of getting dyes is through the Marketboard. Every colour is available there, though some are more expensive than others.

FFXIV Online Store

The Online Store has a few dyes available to purchase. One pot costs $1 or you can get a bundle of 10 dyes of the same color for $7.50.

Dyeing individual items

Dyeing items is easy. All you have to do is right click on the item that you want to dye and click “Dye”. Alternatively, you can add the “Dye” shortcut to your hotbar by pressing P and navigating to the “General” commands section. Once you’ve found the “Dye” shortcut, simply drag it onto your hotbar.

Once you’ve opened up the dyeing menu, as shown above, you can dye anything that you have equipped as well as anything that you currently have in your Inventory or Armory Chest. Dyes are organized into separate color-ways. The rainbow tab at the end is where you’ll find all of the dark, metallic and store-purchased dyes.

Select the dye that you wish to apply to the item and then click “Dye”. This will apply the color to the item and close the dyeing menu.

You can also remove any Dye that is currently on an item by using Terebinth. It’s used in the same way as a dye and is the first option in the Greyscale section of the Dyeing screen. Terebinth is available to purchase from the Marketboard, all of the Dyemongers as well as two further NPCs:

  • Joyous Painter – Idyllshire (X4.5 Y6.4)
  • Eilonwy – The Firmament (X12.2 Y14.2)

If you dye an item before putting it into your Glamour Dresser, it will remain that color every time you use it as part of a Glamour or remove it from the Dresser.

Dyeing Glamours

After placing an item in your Glamour Chest or Armoire, select it as part of your glamour and right click it, selecting “Dye”. Find the color that you wish the item to be and click “Reflect”. The glamour that you are making will show the item in whichever color you’ve chosen. When you’re done, select “Save” at the bottom of the glamour window.

The Dye that you used will not be taken from your inventory until you click “Save”.

The actual item that you used for the Glamour will not be dyed, so you’ll have to Dye it every time you use it in a Glamour in future or if you remove it from your Dresser.
